Windows 11 Snap Layouts: Organize Multiple Windows Side by Side
What Are Snap Layouts?
Snap Layouts is one of the best productivity features in Windows 11. Hover over the maximize button on any window and a grid of layout options appears — choose one to instantly tile your windows in that arrangement.
How to Use Snap Layouts
- Hover your mouse over the maximize button (the square icon in the top-right of any window)
- A Snap Layout overlay appears showing 4–6 layout options depending on your screen size
- Click the zone where you want that window to go
- Windows will prompt you to choose apps for the remaining zones
Keyboard Shortcut Alternative
You can also snap windows with keyboard shortcuts: Win + Left/Right arrow snaps to half the screen. Win + Up/Down adjusts the vertical position. Combine them to snap to quadrants.
Snap Groups
When you snap windows together, Windows 11 remembers them as a Snap Group. Hover over any of the grouped apps on the Taskbar to see and restore the whole group at once — even after switching to other tasks.
Enable or Disable Snap Layouts
Go to Settings → System → Multitasking to toggle Snap Layouts on or off, and to control whether Snap Groups appear on the Taskbar.
Best Layout Combinations
- 50/50 split: Browser on left, notes or email on right
- 70/30 split: Main work app on left, reference or chat on right
- Four-way grid: Ideal for large monitors or when monitoring multiple dashboards
