Sleep vs. Lock vs. Hibernate on Windows 11: What's the Difference?
Three Ways to Pause Your Windows 11 PC
Windows 11 has three ways to stop using your PC without shutting down. They look similar from the outside but behave very differently.
Lock
Lock doesn't change your PC's power state at all — everything keeps running exactly as it was. It simply shows the login screen and requires your password or PIN to get back in.
- Use when: Stepping away briefly and want to secure your PC
- Resume time: Instant — just enter your PIN
- Shortcut: Win + L
Sleep
Sleep puts your PC in a low-power state. Your work is saved to RAM, the processor slows to near-idle, the display turns off, and fans slow or stop.
- Use when: Stepping away for minutes to a few hours and want fast resumption
- Resume time: 1–5 seconds
- Power use: Low but not zero — battery will drain slowly during sleep
- Risk: If battery dies during sleep, unsaved work may be lost
Hibernate
Hibernate saves everything from RAM to your hard drive, then powers off completely. It uses zero power while hibernated.
- Use when: Away for many hours or days and want to preserve battery while keeping your session
- Resume time: 15–45 seconds (reads saved session from disk)
- Power use: Zero
Quick Summary
- Away for 5 minutes: Lock (Win + L)
- Away for a few hours: Sleep
- Away overnight or longer: Hibernate or Shut down
